What Is a Japanese Head Spa?
A Japanese head spa is a deep scalp cleanse and an extended massage of the scalp, neck and shoulders. Here is what actually happens, what it costs, and who it suits.
A Japanese head spa is not a hair wash with better lighting. It is a treatment built around the scalp: cleansing it properly, then working it slowly enough that the rest of you has time to catch up.
The category is still new in most of the United States, which means most people arrive without a clear picture of what they are booking. This is that picture, written plainly.
What actually happens
The structure is consistent, even though the length varies.
You start with a short conversation — your scalp, your hair, anything you want us to know. Then the lights go down.
The first cleanse lifts product, oil and everyday buildup. This is the step a normal shower never really completes, because ninety seconds is not enough time to reach the scalp itself.
Then the part that defines the treatment: the scalp is worked section by section, slowly. Not fast enough to be efficient. Slow enough that your nervous system notices.
Most guests stop tracking time somewhere around minute twenty.
The ritual finishes with a thorough rinse, conditioning chosen for your hair, and a soft dry. You leave with clean hair and a scalp that feels like it belongs to someone calmer.
Why the scalp specifically
The scalp holds a surprising amount of tension, and most people only discover this when somebody finally releases it.
It also accumulates more than people expect: product residue, natural oil, and the general debris of a week. Regular washing addresses the hair. It rarely addresses the scalp underneath it.
How it differs from a regular hair wash
The honest answer is time and intent.
A wash at a salon is a step on the way to a cut or colour — five minutes, functional. A head spa is the whole appointment. Nothing follows it.
That difference changes what the treatment does. Five minutes cleans hair. An hour changes how you feel.
Choosing how long
Length is the main decision, and it matters more than most people expect.
- 30 minutes — a focused cleanse and scalp massage. Good for a first taste or a gap in the day.
- 60 minutes — the full experience. This is where the relaxation genuinely lands, and it is what we recommend for a first visit.
- 90 minutes — adds hot towel therapy and removes the last trace of urgency from the room.
- 120 minutes — hot stone and aromatherapy steam layered onto an already quiet nervous system.
If you are choosing blind, take the 60.

BookWhat it costs
At Aurea, rituals run from $89 for 30 minutes to $249 for the full 120-minute VIP experience. The 60-minute Japanese Head Spa is $149.
First-time guests can book the First Visit Mental Reset Experience at $99 instead of $129 — a 60-minute introduction that includes a scalp consultation, the deep cleansing ritual, warm steam and a facial massage.
You can see the full menu and compare the rituals side by side.
How often is worth it
Many guests come every four to six weeks, which roughly matches how quickly buildup returns for most people.
But there is no rule. Some book around particularly heavy stretches at work. Others simply when they need an hour where nobody can reach them. Both are good reasons.
Who it suits
Almost everyone, honestly — but it lands hardest with people who carry tension in their head and shoulders and have stopped noticing it.
If you have never had one, the thing to know is that it is not really about your hair. The clean scalp is the excuse. The hour is the point.
Questions guests ask
- How long does a Japanese head spa take?
- Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. At Aurea our rituals range from 30 to 120 minutes, and the 60-minute Japanese Head Spa is the one most people start with.
- Will my hair get wet?
- Yes. Cleansing is central to the ritual, so your hair is washed, rinsed, then dried and styled softly before you leave.
- Is it suitable for all hair types?
- Yes. The ritual is adapted to your scalp and hair, whether it is fine, thick, curly or colour-treated. Tell us at booking if your scalp is sensitive.
